Social Stories and Videos
What is a Social Story?
Social stories are a social learning tool that supports the safe and meaningful exchange of information to autistic and neurodivergent minds to explain and help to better understand social situations, and learn ways to behave in said social situations. These can be presented in the form of a book, video or visuals of any kind.
Social stories can help autistic and neurodivergent children learn about social behavior in specific settings like the supermarket, doctor’s office, the playground and so on. You can create a social story for almost any social situation.
Developed in 1991 by Carol Gray, a teacher who worked with young autistic children, the idea behind social stories is to aide individuals who may not pick up on social cues that others may - like body language, facial expressions, gestures and eye contact. This tool is also wonderful to help prep the individual on what is to come by detailing the setting they are about to enter, what typically happens in that setting, and what actions or behaviors are expected of them in that setting.
We will continue to build this page with content that we hope will be helpful in everyday life. If you have an idea for a social story that your family could use, please email us!
